What size memorial diamond should I choose? A carat size guide
Share
Once a family decides on a memorial diamond, one of the first questions is: what size should it be? Carat weights like 0.2 or 0.5 don't mean much until you can picture them, and the right choice depends on how the diamond will be worn, who it's for and your budget.
This guide shows what each size looks like in real life and how to decide.
What is a carat?
A carat is a measure of weight, not size. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Because diamonds are cut to set proportions, weight translates fairly reliably into how wide the diamond looks from above, which is what most people notice.
Diamond size doesn't grow in a straight line with weight. A 1 carat diamond weighs ten times as much as a 0.1 carat diamond, but it's only a little over twice as wide.

Start with how it will be worn
We supply memorial diamonds loose, so you choose the setting with a jeweller you trust. Thinking about the setting first makes the size decision much easier.
- Pendants and necklaces: 0.2ct to 0.5ct suits most pendants and sits comfortably on a fine chain.
- Everyday rings: 0.3ct to 1.0ct is the most common range. Smaller stones sit lower and catch less on clothing.
- Earrings: two smaller stones, such as a pair of 0.1ct or 0.2ct diamonds, make a subtle, balanced pair.
- Men's rings and cufflinks: a single 0.2ct to 0.5ct stone, often set flush, looks understated and is very hard-wearing.
- A statement or heirloom piece: 1.0ct and above is noticeable from across a room.
One diamond, or one for each person?
Many families find that one diamond isn't enough to go around. Rather than one large stone, some choose several smaller diamonds, so each child or grandchild has their own. For example, three 0.2ct diamonds cost less than a single 1.0ct diamond, and mean three people can each wear a piece of the same memory.
If you're considering more than one diamond, get in touch before you send remains, and we'll talk it through with you.
Thinking about budget
Price rises faster than size, especially above 1 carat, because larger diamonds take longer to grow and are harder to produce without flaws. A few things worth knowing:
- Remember the setting. Your jeweller's setting cost comes on top of the diamond, so leave room for it.
- The $99 Welcome Kit comes off the price. It's deducted from your final diamond invoice.
- Coloured diamonds, such as blue or pink, are a flat 20% above the colourless price at every size.

A simple way to choose
- Decide how it will be worn and by whom.
- Look at a ruler. Mark the diameters above on paper and hold them against your hand or a favourite piece of jewellery.
- Set a budget that includes the setting.
- Pick the size that feels right, not the biggest you can afford. A smaller stone worn every day often means more than a larger one kept in a drawer.
