How much does a memorial diamond cost in Australia? (2026 guide)
Share
In Australia, a memorial diamond made from ashes or hair typically costs between about $1,500 for a small 0.1 carat stone and $30,000 or more for a 3 carat stone. Most families choose something between 0.2 and 0.5 carats, which usually lands between $1,800 and $4,000.
That's a wide range, and price is one of the first things people want to understand — often at a time when they're also grieving. This guide explains what you're actually paying for, what should be included in any quote, and how to choose a size that feels right without overstretching.
What memorial diamonds cost in Australia
Prices vary a lot between providers, so it helps to know the general shape of the market before comparing quotes.
- Entry-level stones (0.1–0.3 ct): several established providers start at roughly $2,500–$3,500 for their smallest diamond. Some, including us, start lower.
- Mid-range stones (0.4–0.75 ct): commonly $3,500–$7,000.
- One carat: often $9,000 or more.
- Two carats and above: typically $15,000 to $35,000+.
Some providers publish their prices openly. Others ask you to book a consultation or request a quote first. Neither approach is wrong, but published pricing makes it much easier to compare like with like — and to plan without pressure.
What drives the price
A memorial diamond is a real diamond, grown in a laboratory from carbon taken from your loved one's ashes or hair. The same things that shape the price of any diamond shape this one too.
Carat (size)
Carat is the biggest factor by far. A larger diamond needs more purified carbon and more time in the growth chamber, and the risk of an imperfect growth rises with size. That's why price doesn't climb in a straight line — a 1 carat diamond costs far more than two 0.5 carat diamonds.
For reference, a 0.2 carat round diamond is about 3.8mm across, a 0.5 carat about 5.1mm and a 1 carat about 6.5mm.
Colour
Colourless (white) diamonds are the most common choice. Some providers also offer blue, yellow or other tones, which can add to the cost depending on how the colour is achieved.
Cut and shape
Round brilliant is the classic shape and the most popular for memorial diamonds because it returns the most sparkle. Fancy shapes such as oval, cushion, pear or heart can cost more, as more of the rough diamond is lost in cutting.
Carbon source
Diamonds can be made from cremated ashes or from hair (including a pet's fur). Hair contains more carbon by weight, so less material is needed. The carbon source doesn't usually change the price much, but it can affect how much material you need to send.
What should be included — and the costs to ask about
Two quotes for the same carat size can be thousands of dollars apart once you add up the extras. Before you commit, check whether each of these is in the price:
- Collection kit: Is there a kit to send the ashes or hair safely? Is it free, a refundable deposit, or a non-refundable fee?
- Postage both ways: Who pays to send the material to the lab and to return the finished diamond, fully insured?
- Independent certification: Is the diamond graded by an independent lab such as IGI, and is the report included?
- Laser inscription: Can the girdle be inscribed with a name, date or certificate number?
- GST: Are prices shown including or excluding GST?
- Setting: Is the diamond loose, or set in a ring or pendant? Jewellery is usually extra.
- Unused ashes: Will any material that isn't used be returned to you?
A lower headline price isn't always the cheaper option once these are added. Equally, a higher price doesn't guarantee a better diamond.

How to choose a size and budget
There's no right size. The best choice is the one that fits how the diamond will be worn and what feels comfortable to spend.
- Think about how it will be worn. For a pendant or a ring worn every day, 0.2–0.5 carats is visible and elegant without catching on things. Larger stones suit statement rings or heirloom pieces.
- Consider more than one diamond. Some families choose several smaller diamonds so siblings or grandchildren can each keep one. With us, two 0.2 carat stones cost the same as a single 0.5 carat stone.
- Leave room for the setting. If you plan to set the diamond in jewellery, factor that in from the start.
- Don't feel rushed. Ashes keep. You can order a Welcome Kit, take your time, and decide on size once you're ready.
If it helps to talk it through, you can book a free consultation with us. There's no obligation.
Frequently asked questions
Is a memorial diamond a real diamond?
Yes. It has the same chemical, physical and optical properties as a mined diamond. The difference is that it's grown in a lab from carbon taken from your loved one's ashes or hair.
Why are memorial diamonds more expensive than ordinary lab-grown diamonds?
An ordinary lab-grown diamond starts from commercially produced carbon. A memorial diamond means extracting and purifying carbon from one person's or pet's remains, keeping it separate through every step, and growing a single diamond from it. That individual handling is what you're paying for.
Does a pet memorial diamond cost the same?
Yes, our prices are the same for human and pet memorial diamonds. A diamond can be made from your pet's ashes or fur.
Do I pay the full amount upfront?
You start with the $99 Welcome Kit, which is deducted from your final order. We'll confirm the diamond size and payment details with you before your material is sent to the lab.
How long does it take?
Around three months from when the lab receives your material. You can read more in our guide to how long it takes to make a diamond from ashes.
